The terroir of Château Bizard
The Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation in Drôme Provençale

Along the Rhône River, the ruins of the Villa du Molard, south of Donzère, bear witness to the presence of one of the largest vineyards of antiquity near Château Bizard.
The phylloxera crisis of 1864 destroyed a large portion of France’s vineyards. It would take nearly 30 years for viticulture to recover in the region, thanks to the use of American rootstocks.
Located in Drôme Provençale, the Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation covers approximately 1,300 hectares, stretching from south of Montélimar to the foothills of the Tricastin, between the Cévennes foothills and the Baronnies.
Established in 2010, it succeeded the Côtes du Rhône and Coteaux du Tricastin appellations. As an AOC-classified appellation, it guarantees wines produced from a unique terroir in the Rhône Valley.
The meso-Mediterranean climate, characterized by abundant sunshine, the mistral wind, and dry summers, promotes excellent ripening of the grapes.
The soils, composed of limestone, clay, rounded pebbles, and sand, lend the wines aromatic richness, structure, and balance.
The appellation’s main grape varieties are Syrah, Grenache Noir, Carignan, and Cinsault, as well as white varieties such as Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc.
The wines of Grignan-les-Adhémar are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, structure, and elegance, with a lovely roundness and deep color.
The terroir of Château Bizard in the Rhône Valley
Located in the town of Allan, in the southern Rhône Valley, Château Bizard is situated on a terroir that has been renowned since the 17th century.
The subsoil consists of limestone scree resting on blue marl, providing ideal conditions for growing grapes.
Abundant sunshine and the mistral wind help regulate humidity naturally, limiting the spread of diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. These conditions promote more sustainable viticulture and the production of high-quality wines.
This unique terroir produces round, full-bodied, and aromatic wines, typical of the Drôme Provençale region.

A hillside terroir ideal for viticulture
One of the distinctive features of the Château Bizard vineyard is that its vines are grown on hillsides.
The rows are planted along a north-south axis, allowing for constant natural ventilation thanks to prevailing winds. This air circulation reduces humidity, limits the risk of disease, and decreases the need for treatments.
This growing method promotes slow, even ripening of the grapes without excessive heat, which preserves the wines’ freshness and aromatic quality.
Thanks to this diversity and these optimal natural conditions, Château Bizard produces wines that are balanced, expressive, and true to their terroir.
This ventilation effect is enhanced by the hillside location of our vineyards; in summer, the grapes do not suffer from excessive heat as they do in lowland areas.
