Grignan-les-Adhémar red is a dry red wine belonging to the category of still wines from the southern Rhône Valley. It benefits from the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), guaranteeing its origin and compliance with a strict specification. Château Bizard offers several emblematic cuvées: Le Fornas, Montagne de Raucoule, Serre de Courrent and “1862”, reflecting the full diversity of red wines from the Drôme provençale.
History of Grignan-les-Adhémar red wines
Since 2010, the Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation has replaced Coteaux du Tricastin, in order to better highlight the identity of the vineyard located around the village of Grignan. Red wines represent around 72% of the appellation’s production, making them the dominant style. The vineyard extends over 21 municipalities in the Drôme department, in the heart of the southern Rhône Valley.
Grape varieties of Rhône Valley red wines
Grignan-les-Adhémar red wines are mainly made from the following grape varieties: – Grenache Noir – Syrah Other grape varieties may complement the blend, such as Carignan or Mourvèdre, bringing complexity and structure. Combined with clay-limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate, these grape varieties produce powerful, aromatic and well-balanced wines.
How to serve a Grignan-les-Adhémar red wine
Grignan-les-Adhémar red wine is ideally enjoyed between 14°C and 16°C, in a Rhône-style or Syrah-style red wine glass. For more structured or aged wines, decanting 1 to 2 hours before tasting is recommended to reveal their full aromatic complexity. These wines pair perfectly with red meats, game, stews and characterful cheeses.
Conservation of Grignan-les-Adhémar red wines
For optimal storage, bottles should be kept in a stable environment, away from light and temperature variations. Recommended temperatures: – Aging cellar: 12°C to 14°C – Storage cellar: 10°C to 13°C – Humidity level: 70% to 75% Under these conditions, Grignan-les-Adhémar red wines can be stored for between 5 and 20 years depending on the cuvées, and even longer for great wines.
Best Grignan-les-Adhémar red vintages
Some vintages stand out for their exceptional quality, notably 1978, 1990 and 1998, considered major vintages. Other years such as 1989, 2000, 1985, 2005, 1983 or 2001 are also recognized for their excellent potential. These great years demonstrate the ability of Grignan-les-Adhémar red wines to age gracefully over time.
